Turn off that light

Fivethirtyeight.com sent editor Oliver Roeder to what looks to be the darkest spot in the United States: Gerlach, Nev.

A NASA satellite studying light all around Earth photographed our rock, and found that there are only a very few small areas in the U.S. without light pollution.

Roeder's story looks at the dangers of light pollution, as well as the sky above Gerlach.

Ah, rural Nevada. Dark physically as well as intellectually.

On the road again

I can see Interstate 80 from my kitchen window. Lately, there is fascinating traffic.

Today, two flatbeds rolled east, each carrying a tank. Army green, one with camo tints. Tanks, with turrets and long gun barrels. I don't suppose they'd let me drive one. Tank, not flatbed tractor.

Once in the past month, 11 or so flatbeds went east carrying desert tan Hummers (or Hummer-like) vehicles. A few days later they returned west, empty.

At least two other shipments went east with what might have been huge generators and such.

Public highway, no security violation.

Yes, it's funny to show Mrs. DJT's unsmiling face.

But only if you're an American Idiot.

Outside of England, most Europeans don't go around with sappy smiles every waking moment. Especially Eastern Europeans such as Melania, whose smile comes and goes on cue.

It is a cultural thing. But cultural understanding and Trump voters are mutually exclusive.

It's also why many Europeans have disdain for Americans. We look like saps.

And America's comics are lazy, every waking moment.
