Old-timers wanted

Signed up for a med lab appointment and found that the Lab Corp Web site's birthday section gives a selection of years that goes back to 1861. Lab Corp must give really good medical care.

Wanted: The Pill

Farewell to two of my favorite TV shows. They're not canceled, but the producers have fallen into a deadly trap: Pregnancy in the leading lady.

"Bones" will be ruined by Tempe's pregnancy. "In Plain Sight" will be ruined by Mary's pregnancy.

Bet on it.

The creators will defend the decision to make each character pregnant because each actress is preggers. But, pregnancy changes every woman, in ways that men will never understand. If they proceed to motherhood, these TV moms will never be the fun, challenging characters they are now. It's bad enough to watch Mary Shannon try to squeeze a private life into the witness protection circus. Now, she'll have to find a nanny. And live with guilt.

Same for Temperance Brennan. Even if she's in love with Booth.

Evidence: "Moonlighting." The show cratered.

Evidence: "Deep Space Nine," best "Star Trek" ever. Painfully convoluted explanations of Nana Visitor's mom-hood did not work.

Come on, producers. You've got smart writers and directors and wardrobe people. Challenge them to keep the show going, while concealing the leading lady's expanding body.

Evidence: "Star Trek: The Next Generation," "Stargate: SG-1," "Search for Tomorrow." Every other daytime drama.

I enjoy shows that aren't trapped in a format, but free-range characters don't survive the chains of motherhood.

A TV commercial for Charter Communications shows animals off the nursery wallpaper celebrating at the news that "we're having a boy." would they not celebrate if the future baby was to be a girl?

Change that channel

How messed up is this country?

The Science channel is running an old sci-fi TV show ("Firefly"), and the Syfy channel is running a cooking show.

Man, that is just wrong.

Putting the word "quantum" in a title does not make it sci-fi. And the "sci" in sci-fi doesn't make it science, either.

God's hate shows in snows

Let's start a rumor:

Did you hear what fundamentalist preacher Rev. JimBoy Hawkup said? God told him that the disastrous East Coast, Midwest and Southern weather is punishment ... for making John Boehner Speaker of the House.

Tender loving care ... not

Too bad for the whacko in Tucson who shot the Congresscritter ... the Republicans are back in charge. It was Ronald Reagan and the GOP who slashed mental health care, many years ago, putting thousands of mentally ill people out on the street. Since then, the idea of actually helping the mentally ill has fallen by the wayside.

If people who actually respected people who aren't just like them still had political power, maybe federal funds could help help people like Gun Boy. As is, tough luck.

***

So the Democrats have one less vote in the U.S. House. If The Hammer were still in charge, I'd have no doubts about how the Tucson Wacko got the idea to kill a Demo. And the gun.

***

Note to the ASPCA and the singer who fronts the TV ads: You want people to adopt cats and dogs? Don't try to guilt them into it. Nobody wants a sad puppy. An animal taken in through guilt won't have a good home.
